Kathy Degner

Director, Bird Science Program
Kathy dedicated 20 years as a Speech & Language Specialist, embodying her motto of seizing every opportunity to foster a love for wildlife and conservation within her students. For over a decade, she served as an educational docent at a zoo in Northern California, contributing to developing and presenting Wildlife Theater programs featuring live animals.

Actively involved with the Pasadena Audubon Society for over 15 years, she spearheaded outreach efforts as a former Board member. She then co-founded the successful Bird Science Program (BSP) for the Pasadena Unified School District alongside Lois Brunet. As a Master Teacher and raptor handling trainer for BSP, Kathy assumed the role of Director to ensure the program's ongoing evolution.

In her spare time, Kathy combines her passion for birding with wildlife photography, exploring local hotspots and beyond. As a perpetual learner and educator, Kathy also became a certified California Naturalist with an emphasis on marine ecosystems. When not in Pasadena, you might find her in Morro Bay, educating the public about conservation and the importance of her beloved sea otters as keystone species in the kelp forest ecosystem.
